Former Jazz student at the Royal Academy of Music and the one-to-watch for 2014, Kwabs has more than a flutter of hype surrounding him. And quite rightly so, his single ‘Wrong or Right‘ has been blown up all over the radio. At first listen to Kwabena Sarkodee Adjepong’s deep, impassioned voice, it hits you that this young prodigy has true classic influences. Think of a gothic Luther Vandross with a heavy heart and you’re almost close. With the introduction of artists like Sampha, Willis Earl Beal and Sam Smith It brings me joy to know that we’re starting to see more music that is deeply rooted in the focus on the voice.
Simple and sombre electronic beats accompany his song, ‘Last Stand‘ and was unsurprisingly produced by and co-written with current hot topic SOHN. It’s clear that Adjepong has more to say, and I’m listening with fervent and childish excitement. His intuitive and dripping-with-soul vocal texture has an intelligence that’s beyond his years. This is most definitely what r’n’b has been waiting for. ‘Last Stand’ and his heartfelt cover of James Blake’s ‘The Wilhelm Scream‘ are both filled with so much passion, it makes me excited about his future in music.
